After the worldwide success of their last albums, German pop phenomenon Tokio Hotel moved to Los Angeles and took a year off. Now, Bill and Tom Kaulitz, Georg Listing and Gustav Schäfer are back to music scene with their new album Kings Of Suburbia. The band sits down with Schön! to talk about their dreams, their advice and parents.

Tras el éxito mundial de sus últimos álbumes, fenómeno pop alemán Tokio Hotel se mudó a Los Angeles y tomó un año de descanso. Ahora, Bill y Tom Kaulitz, Georg Listing y Gustav Schäfer están de vuelta a la escena musical con su nuevo álbum de Kings Of Suburbia. La banda se sienta con Schön! para hablar de sus sueños, sus consejos y padres.

*What do you love most about Los Angeles?
Tom: For me, it’s the freedom we have in California. When we left Germany, it was the very first time that we were able to live a regular life. Suddenly, we were able to do whatever we wanted to do. That was a great feeling, it was completely different from our life in Europe.
Bill: I love the weather so much. It’s sunny everyday and it feels like we’re constantly on holidays. But there’s is also a negative aspect about the weather in Los Angeles – people become a bit lazy with fashion. Their outfits can be a bit boring. That´s hard for me, because I´m really interested in fashion.

**¿Qué es lo que más te gusta de Los Ángeles?
Tom: Para mí, es la libertad que tenemos en California. Cuando salimos de Alemania, que era la primera vez que hemos sido capaces de vivir una vida normal. De repente, hemos sido capaces de hacer lo que queríamos hacer. Eso fue una gran sensación, era completamente diferente de nuestra vida en Europa.

Bill: Me encanta el clima tanto. Es soleado todos los días y se siente como que estamos constantemente en los días festivos. Pero hay también un aspecto negativo sobre el tiempo en Los Ángeles - la gente se vuelve un poco perezoso con la moda. Sus trajes pueden ser un poco aburrido. Eso es difícil para mí, porque estoy muy interesado en la moda.

*Do you remember your very first costume on stage?
Bill: I do. When we started performing, we had a concert in our hometown Magdeburg. For this concert, I was wearing a skirt. I still remember that I was wearing this extraordinary garment in combination with a homemade t-shirt and Dr. Martens. We had no money left, so I often created my own costumes.

**¿Recuerdas tu primer traje en el escenario?
Bill: yo. Cuando empezamos a realizar, tuvimos un concierto en nuestra ciudad natal Magdeburg. Para este concierto, yo llevaba una falda. Todavía me acuerdo de que yo llevaba esta prenda extraordinaria en combinación con una camiseta casera y Dr. Martens. No teníamos dinero a la izquierda, así que a menudo creado mis propios trajes.

*Tell me about your biggest dream that became true?
Bill: We always wanted to be successful with our music. My brother and I were seven when we started writing our own songs. Back in the days, we didn’t have any producer or record company supporting us in our hometown. Together with Georg and Gustav, we have been a band for such a long time – more than fourteen years now.

**Háblame de tu mayor sueño que se hizo realidad?
Bill: Nosotros siempre quiso tener éxito con nuestra música. Mi hermano y yo éramos siete años cuando empezamos a escribir nuestras propias canciones. En los días, no teníamos ninguna empresa productora o registro apoyarnos en nuestra ciudad natal. Junto con Georg y Gustav, hemos sido una banda durante mucho tiempo - más de catorce años.

*So you never thought it would be possible?
Bill: Definitely not. It was just a dream and we are so blessed that it became true some years later. Now, we are living this dream and we are more than happy about it.

**Así que usted nunca pensó que sería posible?
Bill: Definitivamente no. Era sólo un sueño y somos tan bendecidos que se hizo realidad unos años después. Ahora, estamos viviendo este sueño y estamos más que contentos.

*What does your family think about your career?
Tom: They hate us. No, I´m just joking.
Bill: They are really happy for us, actually. Our mum is really creative and our stepfather plays the guitar in a band. It sounds funny, but we are living their dream as well. They are really supportive and we have got a strong connection to our family. We have always been focused on creativity; music was an important part of us from an early age.

**¿Qué piensa tu familia de tu carrera?
Tom: Ellos nos odian. No, sólo estoy bromeando.
Bill: Ellos son realmente feliz para nosotros, en realidad. Nuestra madre es realmente creativa y nuestro padrastro toca la guitarra en una banda. Suena divertido, pero estamos viviendo su sueño también. Son un gran apoyo y nos tienen una fuerte conexión con nuestra familia. Siempre nos hemos centrado en la creatividad; música era una parte importante de nosotros desde una edad temprana.

*If you didn’t have this enormous success with Tokio Hotel, where do you think you’d be right now?
Tom: Probably at home without any plans what to do. No, I´m just joking again. Hopefully, I would have started something creative? I can´t imagine sitting in an office the whole day. When I was younger, I always wanted to be a lawyer or a porn star.

**Si no tiene este enorme éxito con Tokio Hotel, ¿dónde crees que estarías en este momento?
Tom: Probablemente en casa sin ningún plan lo que deben hacer. No, sólo estoy bromeando otra vez. Con suerte, habría comenzado algo creativo? Me puedo imaginar sentado en una oficina todo el día. Cuando era más joven, siempre quise ser un abogado o una estrella del porno.

*A career as a porn star?
Tom: Probably working as a lawyer and a porn star as spare-time work. Great idea, isn´t it?

Tom: Es probable que trabajaba como abogado y una estrella del porno como trabajo-tiempo libre. Una gran idea, ¿no es cierto?

*Back to reality: can you describe the process of preparing a new album?
Bill: We started very slowly after taking a year off. We just needed some time for our creative side, as well as taking time to move to the United States. After a while, we wanted to create a new album: we flew to our studio in New York to start working on the record. For the first time, we produced absolutely everything on our own. Every song was written by us.

**Volver a la realidad: ¿puede describir el proceso de preparación de un nuevo álbum?
Bill: Empezamos muy despacio después de tomar un año sabático. Sólo necesitábamos un poco de tiempo para nuestro lado creativo, así como tomarse el tiempo para trasladarse a los Estados Unidos. Después de un tiempo, hemos querido crear un nuevo álbum: volamos a nuestro estudio en Nueva York para empezar a trabajar en el expediente. Por primera vez, hemos producido absolutamente todo por nuestra cuenta. Cada canción fue escrita por nosotros.

*Why?
Bill: Nearly no one understood what we wanted to do with our new album. Normally, we record new songs by playing the guitar. This time it was different – Tom was more interested in synthesizers. In the end, the album sounded more electronic than Tokio Hotel has ever sounded previously. It sounds like the nightlife of Los Angeles.

**¿Por qué?
Bill: Casi nadie entendía lo que queríamos hacer con nuestro nuevo álbum. Normalmente, grabamos nuevas canciones tocando la guitarra. Esta vez fue diferente - Tom estaba más interesado en los sintetizadores. Al final, el álbum suena más electrónico que Tokio Hotel nunca ha sonado previamente. Suena como la vida nocturna de Los Angeles.

*Is there any piece of advice you would have liked to hear at the beginning of your career?
Bill: Read every contract carefully. Retrospectively, I wouldn´t have changed anything. For sure, we were also making lots of mistakes during the last couple of years. I think we are still making mistakes, aren’t we?

Tom: Generally speaking, we were extremely lucky.
Bill: But there is a process that we have learned: keeping the balance between career and privacy. We’ve always wanted to keep it this way, but it hasn´t always been easy.

**¿Hay algún consejo que le hubiera gustado escuchar al principio de su carrera?
Bill: Lea cada contrato cuidadosamente. Retrospectivamente, yo no podría haber cambiado nada. Por supuesto, nosotros también estábamos haciendo muchos errores durante el último par de años. Creo que todavía estamos cometiendo errores, ¿no es así?

Tom: En general, tuvimos mucha suerte.
Bill: Pero hay un proceso que hemos aprendido: mantener el equilibrio entre la carrera y la privacidad. Siempre hemos querido mantener de esta manera, pero no siempre  sido fácil.

*Because of your fan base? Has it changed during the last couple of years?
Bill: Lots of guys listen to our music now. Our management just told us that there are a lot of boys who watch our videos on YouTube. Back in the days, we almost felt as if there were only teenage girls at our concerts.

**Debido a su base de fans? ¿Ha cambiado durante el último par de años?
Bill: Un montón de chicos escuchan nuestra música ahora. Nuestra gestión nos acaba de decir que hay un montón de chicos que ven nuestros videos en YouTube. En los días, casi nos sentimos como si sólo había adolescentes en nuestros conciertos.

*Are there any differences between American and European Fans?
Bill: Not really. It feels like a huge family for us. They are connected online from all over the world, it´s so nice to see that.
Tom: Unfortunately, we haven´t met our American fans for a while. That´s the reason why we would like to start a tour in the United States. 

** ¿Hay diferencias entre los aficionados americanos y europeos?
Bill: En realidad no. Se siente como una gran familia para nosotros. Están conectados en línea de todo el mundo, Es tan agradable ver eso.
Tom: Por desgracia, Todavía no hemos reunió nuestros fans americanos por un tiempo. Esa es la razón por la cual nos gustaría comenzar una gira por Estados Unidos.

*Have you ever thought about coming home to Europe?
Tom: Georg and Gustav still live in Germany. Bill and I, we love life in Los Angeles. At the moment, there is no reason for us to move back to Europe. We spend so much time in airplanes – it almost feels as if we are living on the road. Maybe one day, we´ll move back to Germany. Italy or Mexico would be nice as well.

**¿Alguna vez has pensado en volver a casa a Europa?
Tom: Georg y Gustav todavía viven en Alemania. Bill y yo, nos encanta la vida en Los Angeles. Por el momento, no hay ninguna razón para que nos movamos de regreso a Europa. Pasamos tanto tiempo en los aviones - casi se siente como si estuviéramos viviendo en el camino. Tal vez un día, regresaremos a Alemania. Italia o México sería bueno también.

*Is there anything in show business you are afraid of?
Bill: We have seen a lot during the last couple of years and we do have an idea of how to manage show business – I feel like we’ve figured it out. The most important thing is just that we are always together. We are a family. As long as my brother and my band are next to me, I feel like if I can deal with everything.

**¿Hay algo en el espetaculoque les de miedo?
Bill: Hemos visto mucho durante el último par de años y tenemos una idea de cómo manejar espectáculo - Me siento como que hemos pensé que fuera. Lo más importante es que siempre estamos juntos. Somos una familia. Mientras mi hermano y mi banda son a mi lado, me siento como si yo puedo con todo.

*What moment of your career are you most proud of?
Bill: It´s really hard to choose: I´m proud that we won a VMA in 2008. It still feels so unreal.
Tom: I felt proud when we finished our new album.

**¿Qué momento de tu carrera estás más orgulloso?
Bill: Es realmente difícil elegir: Estoy orgulloso de que hemos ganado un VMA en 2008. Todavía se siente tan irreal.
Tom: Me sentí orgulloso cuando terminamos nuestro nuevo álbum.

*What´s next for Tokio Hotel?
Bill: We will start the first part of our world tour in March. London will be our first stop. Our world tour will be more intimate than before, we want to play in smaller clubs this time. We will just go everywhere to see our fans. It will be great.

**Qué se vienen para Tokio Hotel?
Bill: Vamos a comenzar la primera parte de nuestra gira mundial en marzo. Londres será nuestra primera parada. Nuestra gira mundial será más íntima que antes, queremos jugar en clubes más pequeños esta vez. No hacemos más que ir a todas partes a ver a nuestros fans. Será genial.
